Rehabilitation following tendon repairs

Duran and Houser protocol –

  • Does not uses rubber band.
  • Splint – dorsal blocking splint. Wrist – 20° flexion, MCPJ – 50° flexion, IPJ – full extension

0-4.5 weeks-

  • 10 passive DIPJ extension with MCPJ & PIPJ flexion
  • 10 passive PIPJ extension with MCPJ & DIPJ flexion.
  • Done hourly.

4.5 – 5.5 weeks –

  • Splint replaced by wrist cuff with elastic flexion traction from fingernail to cuff.
  • Exercise to be done as described above.

5.5 – 7.5 weeks –

  • Wrist cuff discontinued.
  • Blocking and fisting exercises started.

7.5 week –

  • Light resistive exercise.
